Maya Prasad’s predilection for space travel resides in her very bones. Her parents, Sunil and Amrita, were crewmen on the deep-space freighter Krusadai for many years before Amrita became pregnant with their first child. As exposure to microgravity can have a negative impact on development in pre-natal and early child development, the couple temporarily settled in the newly founded Savoy colony on Showalter for Maya’s birth.
A member of the so-called “Castaway Generation,” the first large-scale generation of humans born outside Earth’s solar system, Maya grew up with little attachment to her ancestral homeworld. Showalter was no true home to her either; she knew the planet was little more than an extended layover to her parents, and internalized the concept of “home” as a fluid, ephemeral thing.
Maya inherited her parents’ wanderlust, along with their technical proficiency, and determined at an early age she would work on a spaceship one day. By her early teens, she was already in an apprenticeship to a starship engineer in Savoy’s spaceport. She proved to be a swift and adaptive learner, and by the time she was old enough to leave the planet, she had mastered the operation, upkeep, and repair of every essential ship component.
Though Maya was ready to hire onto a crew, most freelance ship captains at the time sought their new recruits on Earth and the more populous colonies in the Sol system rather than the frontier worlds. For several years, Maya’s itch for space travel remained unscratched as she grew to feel more and more confined in Showalter’s gravity well.
At the age of twenty-one, Maya finally found her opportunity. Pariva Yadav, captain of the Chandrakanta, arrived on Showalter in need of a new engineering officer, and quickly saw Maya’s potential. Though taking a chance on someone with no prior flight experience was a gamble, Maya swiftly proved to be an invaluable addition to the Chandrakanta’s crew.
Respected by her crew for her quick-thinking and ability to remain calm under pressure, Maya kept every component of the ship in immaculate condition. In just a few short years, she was promoted to chief engineer, keeping the ship operating at peak performance through dozens of long-haul deep-space flights.
